Background of the Study
Youth political engagement in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions, has been a subject of considerable attention in recent years. In Yola South LGA, Adamawa State, youth participation in politics has been rising, fueled by the increasing use of digital platforms for political discourse, activism, and voter mobilization. This trend represents a shift from traditional forms of engagement, as younger generations are more inclined to voice their opinions and participate in political activities through social media, protests, and rallies (Mohammed & Hassan, 2024). However, despite this enthusiasm, challenges such as political apathy, limited political education, and the dominance of older political elites continue to hinder meaningful youth participation in the political process.
This study seeks to assess the level and nature of youth political engagement in Yola South LGA. It aims to explore factors influencing political participation among young people in the region, the impact of education and socio-economic factors on political behavior, and the role of digital platforms in fostering political awareness and participation. The research also seeks to understand the barriers preventing deeper involvement of youth in the political landscape, offering insights into how these challenges can be addressed.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Youth political engagement in northern Nigeria, particularly in Yola South LGA, remains low despite increasing awareness and opportunities for participation. Factors such as political disenfranchisement, inadequate access to political education, and the lack of platforms for meaningful youth involvement contribute to the problem. There is a growing concern about the underrepresentation of youth in political decision-making processes, both at local and state levels. This study seeks to investigate the causes of low political engagement among youth in Yola South LGA and examine how youth involvement can be increased to enhance democratic governance in the region (Abubakar & Ganiyu, 2024).
